Alun Jones

Caebwd lies near the western end of Cwm Berwyn. The single-track road from Tregaron that passes the front gate and heads on up the valley is one of the most famous and spectacular routes across the mountains.

From the farm’s higher fields, the view is very similar to that in the watercolour by Prince Charles used in the logo for products associated with the Cambrian Mountains Initiative.

Alun Jones is the fifth generation of his family to farm here. He owns 400 acres and rents another 250 on which he keeps 850 breeding ewes and 200 replacement ewe lambs. Over previous years he also raised hundreds of cattle but has given that up now; just two young Highland Cattle remain as a reminder of those days. He now combines farming with groundworks contracting in the area.

He and his wife have two grown up daughters, who perhaps won’t carry on the farming tradition; one runs a hairdressers in Tregaron, whilst the other has just won a place to study Art at Goldsmiths College in London.
